Court clerks are responsible for maintaining official court records, ensuring accurate documentation of proceedings, and preserving the integrity of the judicial process.
The court clerk is responsible for filing and maintaining court records for: estates/probate, guardianships and conservatorships, divorces, child custody matters, adoptions, property disputes, and mental and drug/alcohol involuntary commitments.
The clerk maintains and preserves county land records including: deeds, mortgages, liens, easements, plat and subdivisions, wills, power of attorneys, DD214. The clerk's vault serves as the library of property history for the county.
The chancery clerk serves as clerk to the county Board of Supervisors by attending board meetings, recording official minutes, and maintaining board resolutions and order.
The Hancock county chancery clerk acts as the county treasurer overseeing the following actions: receiving county funds, depositing public monies, disbursing approved payments, and maintaining county bank accounts.
The clerk serves as county auditor by examining county claims before payment, verifying invoices are lawful and budgeted, and maintaining financial accountability records. The clerk works in connection with the county finance director.
The Hancock County chancery clerk's office is a designated passport agency. New passports, help with renewals, and pictures can be provided at the Annex office on Hwy 90.
The clerk managed tax-forfeited land redemption records. The office records each parcel sold for taxes, tracks purchaser information, and maintains redemption ledgers. The clerk determines back taxes due, accrued penalties, statutory interest, and notice/service costs. The clerk accepts redemption payments, send statutory notices, and issues tax deeds if not redeemed.
